Community Quilt Project on Display at San Lorenzo Library

Monday, March 12, 2012

Artist Suzanne Sullivan lead one-hundred and fifty-eight friends and neighbors in learning the unique art of printmaking. Each participant’s beautiful personal quilt panel is being displayed as the Library’s “Building San Lorenzo Together” Community Collage Quilt!

The panels were created on Saturday, March 3 in the outside courtyard of the San Lorenzo Library. The scene was almost Parisian.

San Lorenzo’s quilt pieces will become part of a month-long effort to create one mosaic masterpiece. This is part of the Art is Education month extravaganza of art programs in the Alameda County Library’s.

Here are some artists and their work:

A Little Like Netflix, Only Free!

This month’s DVD Express will come thundering down the track on Thursday, December 15 from 1:30-3pm at the San Lorenzo Library. DVD Express at the San Lorenzo Library offers a special block of time for Library customers to reserve the new DVDs that aren’t on the shelf because they have holds on them.

Branch Manager, Anthony Dos Santos, will be present to make sure that you can place holds on all the brand new movies you would like to see. When your name comes up in the “hold queue,” the San Lorenzo Library will call or email to let you know that you can come down and pick up the movie.

Once notified that the movie is at the Library for you, you have about ten days to pick it up. You can check the movie out for a period of seven days. If there are no remaining holds on the movie, you can renew the film for another seven days. You are able to maintain a list of ten movies on hold at all times. In other words, when you check a movie out, you have the opportunity to place a hold on a new one.

If you are not familiar with how to check your personal account on the Alameda County Library website, www.aclibrary.org, let your librarians know. You can sign up for a computer class at the San Lorenzo Library during which a librarian will work with you one-on-one to help you become confident using this wonderful tool.

Last but not least, drop by the Library on December 24 to enjoy holiday cookies with your favorite librarians. They would love to see you.

High school students and families, you are most cordially invited to join us at the library for some awesome workshops and seminars on college admissions. Whether or not you have lined your room with UC Davis gear or you haven’t even given college a second thought, come check us out! We’ll probably have some valuable info for you. Regardless, all participants will be fed great snacks and be entered into our weekly raffle for college apparel. Last week, we raffled off a UC Berkeley sweatshirt; what will it be this week??

Here’s a snapshot from last week’s workshop, hosted by the Gates Millennium Scholars and the SLZ Library. Students learned about financial aid, scholarships, and tips on applications for college funding.

This Saturday is our workshop, ” The College Admissions Process Unveiled.” Where to even start with college admissions? Bring your questions to Gerna Benz of Bay Area College Planners and assemble your plan for college!

Also, set our upcoming workshops into your cell phone calendars!

Volunteer Opportunity

Attention Teens!

The San Lorenzo Library is looking for volunteers to help staff Homework Central, an after-school program for K thru 8th grade students who need assistance with their homework. We rely on high school volunteers to help these younger students with their assignments. This is an excellent opportunity to make a difference in your community. Plus, volunteering looks great on job and college applications, and the time you spend at Homework Central can be used to fulfill your school’s community service requirements.

Starting September 28th, Homework Central runs Monday thru Thursday, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. If you’d like to volunteer and can commit to one day per week, please stop by the library today to fill out an application!

Questions? Contact Serenity Dean at 510-670-6283.

Time for a Change

Sunday, May 25, 2008

Teen Fiction

San Lorenzo Library’s teens have been sharing their area with Adult Non-fiction for a very long time. Well, it’s time for a change! The last of the 900’s were recently shifted, and the teen area now exclusively holds the teen collection. Teen fiction, non-fiction, classics, cliffs notes, biographies, and graphic novels have all been rearranged. It might take a moment to get yourself oriented, but we think you’ll enjoy the change. There is even some extra space to display teen artwork.  If you’re a teen and you’d like to contribute a piece of art to the teen area, stop by one of our Green Teen Art-a-thon events and create something.  Tuesdays, June 17th and 24th at 2 p.m.
