Poetry in Motion is Coming Through San Lorenzo Library!

Have you ever been inspired by a piece of spoken word? Have you ever hoped to use your experiences for creative inspiration?

Express yourself at our Poetry in Motion tour date TODAY! We’re welcoming high school students to learn the how’s of spoken word. Beats, Rhymes, and Life, a leading organization in the Ashland Youth Center project, will guide all of us – beginners and experts – to make our own literary works that we can truly be proud of.

Take a risk, and try poetry out! The program will be at the San Lorenzo Library (behind Lucky’s on Hesperian Blvd.) on Today, Saturday, March 31st, 2012 from 1P.M. to 4P.M. Bring your friends!

Community Quilt Project on Display at San Lorenzo Library

Monday, March 12, 2012

Artist Suzanne Sullivan lead one-hundred and fifty-eight friends and neighbors in learning the unique art of printmaking. Each participant’s beautiful personal quilt panel is being displayed as the Library’s “Building San Lorenzo Together” Community Collage Quilt!

The panels were created on Saturday, March 3 in the outside courtyard of the San Lorenzo Library. The scene was almost Parisian.

San Lorenzo’s quilt pieces will become part of a month-long effort to create one mosaic masterpiece. This is part of the Art is Education month extravaganza of art programs in the Alameda County Library’s.

Here are some artists and their work:

Today is the first day of Art is Education!

Thursday, March 1, 2012

The San Lorenzo Library, together with the Alameda County Alliance for Art Learning Leadership, present to you our second annual Art is Education month! With so much excitement and pride, the library is celebrating and advocating arts education through sponsoring a month-long series of FREE (yes, free!) arts events! The scope of this county-wide project is quite large. In the Alameda County Library system alone, over 50 free arts events will be hosted. You can check out our entire March calendar at the official website  here.

So, what’s happening at the San Lorenzo Library? Well, here’s just a teaser! More to come!

First, today is the launch of our Childrens’ Picture Book Contest, open to all ages. To some, this may seem, well, childish. Haha, however, we really encourage everyone to apply! Everyone has a life lesson, hilarious story, or imagined tale that can be put into beautiful illustrated form. We’re excited to read our top entries during our library storytime. If you haven’t been convinced yet, we’ve also thrown in a $50 prize for our top entries in each age group! 🙂 The official rules are published below.

Secondly, join us in a community art project! This Saturday, March 3rd from 12-4PM, you’re invited to our printmaking workshop! Not only will artist Susan Sullivan be teaching the technique behind this versatile art, we will – with your permission – use one of your prints to piece together a community “quilt” or banner with all our work! It’ll be a mosaic, mural masterpiece! Come join us! Community art projects are hard to come by, and you can’t give up an opportunity like this!

We’re excited to see you there!
