audience 3-29Oscar PenarandaThe Filipino American Cultural Arts Festival at the San Lorenzo Library drew over sixty-five people from many different cultures. The program featured many authors reading from their work, a filmmaker, a performance group, a live band, wonderful Filipino finger food, and an exciting sense of community. Music was provided by the band, Little Brown Brother, a jazz/blues/kundiman group. Ben Luis played bass, Chris Planas the guitar, Mike Fernando the drums, and Carlos Zialzita provided vocals and mouth organ.

The gallery of participants was introduced by Oscar Penaranda, a high school teacher and president of the East Bay chapter of The Filipino American National Historical Society. Mr. Penaranda is also an author of prose and poetry. Other presenters included Mil Orpilla, Jeannie Barroga, Gemma Nemenzo, Evangeline Canonizado Buell, Abe Ignacio, Eli Africa, Baylan Megino, the Bindlestiff Players, Gloria Bachrach, and Victoria Santos.

  1. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share our stories, so many of which have touched the San Lorenzo area. Because the FANHS Bay Area Consortium has several authors, we look forward to participating again soon!
